Built in the middle of the 1500s right in the heart of the city, this loggia stands only steps away from Ponte Vecchio. It was meant for trading silk and fancy things, but now it mostly has leather goods and keepsakes for sale. The main spot in the loggia is where you’ll find the Fountain of the Piglet.

In this immediate vicinity are contained not only the enormous Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with the Dome of Brunelleschi but also Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Baptistery-all sandwiched together surrounded by a lot more ancient architecture.

Medici Riccardi Palace (Palazzo Medici Riccardi)

Cosimo il Vecchio de’ Medici commissioned the Palace in 1444, which Michelozzo architect designed for the family to stay. It is an important example of early Renaissance civil architecture. Apart from being a private residence for the Medici family—Lorenzo il Magnifico among them—the palace was also a public and political gathering place where visiting dignitaries were received.
